Why Don't You Have A Home Sauna?

Once considered a luxury even for the wealthy, today the home sauna is realistically within the reach of most Americans. For reasons beyond simple luxury, this is wonderful. Sauna benefits can extend to your whole health: they can relax and heal sore muscles, calm and soothe your emotions after a long day, and improve the overall health and youth of your skin.

A home sauna is a specially-heated wood-lined room with benches along at least one wall. The heating unit in a sauna generally works on natural stones to raise the room temperature to 150 degrees or more with very low humidity, but users can pour water over the rocks to raise the humidity as desired. Heat is trapped inside the low ceiling, and the sauna user can move closer to or further from the heat at will. Home saunas are typically small; the best way to gauge the size you’ll need is by considering bench area, which should be at least two feet per anticipated occupant.

You can purchase a sauna kit to build your own home sauna in just about any spare space you have: a spare room, an unused bathroom, a bonus room, even outside in a shed. This is because you don’t need any special plumbing connections to build a home sauna. You will need a dedicated electrical circuit to operate your sauna’s heater, however, so be ready to hire an electrician if you can’t do your own wiring.

Home sauna kits come in easy-to-assemble modular sets that assemble into free-standing rooms, making it easy to set up in any sufficiently large area; or you can order them in custom sizes to build to fit your space. Most of the time, the sauna kit comes with the wall and ceiling units completely assembled and ready to put into place. The pieces you should look for in your kit include the walls and ceiling, benches, interior supports, an appropriate heater with temperature

controls for your sauna size, floor panels to place over a waterproof floor, a light, a prehung door, and whatever other amenities you might want to make your sauna perfect for you.

You do have to keep your wits about you when using a sauna. While sauna benefits can be considerable, using non-UL-rated electrical components or bringing electrical equipment in that can’t take the heat and humidity can be deadly. All your wiring should be done by a certified electrician, not an amateur. The door to your sauna should open outward, not inward, and have no locks; this ensures you can get out if you need to. No paint or other treatments should be applied to the interior surface of your home sauna, as the fumes released by high heat can be toxic. Finally, ask your doctor’s advice for the best use of a sauna, especially if you have underlying medical conditions. The high heat can be deadly in some cases if misused, particularly if you don’t leave when you’re too hot.

With proper care for safety, especially during initial installation, sauna benefits for your health can be available to you at any time, right in your own home. How much better can it get?
